The Cheonggyecheon Stream Restoration Project is a groundbreaking initiative that transformed the urban landscape of Seoul, South Korea. The project, which was completed in 2005, involved the restoration of a neglected waterway that had been covered up by a highway for several decades.
The Cheonggyecheon restoration project had the purpose of preserving the unique identity of the natural environment and the historic resources in the CBD of Seoul, and to reinforce the surrounding business area with information technology, international affairs and digital industries.
The government wanted to improve connectivity between the city’s north and south sides, which the freeway divided. Transportation experts were concerned that removing the elevated highway would increase traffic congestion and chaos in the northern end of the city since it carried 169,000 vehicles per day.

The total length of the restored area is 5.8 km within an area of approximately 1,000 acres. This whole area has been turned into a green strip that is very beneficial for the citizens of Seoul. The cost of the restoration scheme was $281million.
As the economy thrived, cars filled up the expressway. Just three decades later, the surrounding Cheonggye area recorded highest levels of noise and congestion in the city.
