Maldives Minister’s Comment On PM Modi triggers a massive backlash
Social media posts by a minister and other leaders in Maldives days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Lakshadweep archipelago have triggered a row. PM Modi’s visit to the country’s smallest Union Territory comprising 36 islands was seen as a move to promote tourism on the island.
A leader from Maldive Abdulla Mahzoom Majid tweeted on social media site X previously known as Twitter: While I wish success for India’s tourism, targeting the Maldives so explicitly isn’t diplomatic. India faces significant challenges competing in beach tourism, considering our resort infrastructure exceeds their total islands. Plus this is your culture and he tagged Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi .
A tweet by a Maldives minister has sparked a row on social media days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits the Lakshadweep island. In the tweets, the ministers used derogatory words against PM Modi, accused India of targeting Maldives, and said India faces significant challenges in competing with the Maldives in beach tourism.
PM Modi last week went snorkelling and shared his “exhilarating experience” of the islands in the Arabian Sea. The PM posted pictures of his undersea exploration on X and shared his “exhilarating experience” of the sojourn in the islands located in the Arabian Sea.
The tweet came after PM Modi’s posts on X (formerly Twitter) about snorkelling in the Lakshadweep went viral, prompting social media users in India to suggest the island Union Territory as an alternate tourist destination to the Maldives.

Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed condemn the act
Mohammed Nasheed said Strongly condemning the comments by the ministers, former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed asked the incumbent President Mohamed Muizzu to tell the world that the comments by the ministers “do not reflect government policy”.
“What appalling language by Maldives government official Mariyam Shiuna towards the leader of a key ally, that is instrumental for Maldives’ security and prosperity. The Mohamed Muizzu government must distance itself from these comments and give clear assurance to India they do not reflect government policy,” Mr Nasheed said in a post on X.
“The government of Maldives is aware of derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders and high-ranking individuals. These opinions are personal and do not represent the views of the government of Maldives,” it said.
India and Maldives ties
After conclusion of recent election in Maldives , newly appointed President Mohamed Muizzu came strong against India and Maldives ties , he expressed his strong desire to oppose Indian influence in Maldives .when Mr Muizzu won the Maldives presidential poll, that was seen as a setback for India – especially as his opponent, the incumbent Ibrahim Mohamed Solih – had drawn his country closer to Delhi since taking over in 2018.
The newly elected president even told the BBC in an exclusive interview where he was seen expressing his opinion how he met the Indian ambassador a few days after his victory and “told him very clearly that every single Indian military personnel here should be removed”.
Mr Muizzu’s alliance favours closer ties with China, which has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in the Maldives in the form of loans and grants for infrastructure and development projects. and all the tension rise from then , experts also see Lakshadweep tourism event in relation to that angle.
After the incident Boycott Maldives was in trend, many have posted disappointment after the incident in Social media site X

More than 2300 flight tickets have been cancelled.
Maldivians should know that we Indians can destroy their economy.
Bollywood celebrities also express their disappointment
Even Bollywood celebrities also jumped into debate and expressed their opinion on this action of Maldives, Indian cinema star Akshay Kumar wrote on his social media post on X :
Came across comments from prominent public figures from Maldives passing hateful and racist comments on Indians. Surprised that they are doing this to a country that sends them the maximum number of tourists. We are good to our neighbors but why should we tolerate such unprovoked hate? I’ve visited the Maldives many times and always praised it, but dignity first. Let us decide to #ExploreIndianIslands and support our own tourism.
John Abraham, another popular actor, praised the hospitality and marine life in Lakshadweep. “With the amazing Indian hospitality, the idea of ‘Atithi Devo Bhava’ and a vast marine life to explore. Lakshadweep is the place to go,” he wrote.
One social media X user also expressed his disappointment and written :My friend sent me this & I cancelled my Maldives trip…lol
